The staff of Azerbaijan University visited the Alley of Martyrs on the 30th anniversary of the tragedy of January 20, 1990, put carnations at the graves of heroic sons who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for the independence and territorial integrity of our country. The staff expressed their respect and reverence to the unforgettable memory of our martyrs.
After the visit, the memory of 20 January martyrs was commemorated with a minute of silence with the accompaniment of the National Anthem at the commemorative event held at the University's academic building.
At the event it was noted that January 20 was regarded as a day of sadness and mourning for many years. It should not be forgotten that January 20 was also included as a heroic page in the history of the national liberation struggle of the Azerbaijani people. Becoming furious from the aggressive actions of Armenia, which presents territorial claims against our country, from the support of the former USSR leadership for Armenia, and from the indifference of the local authorities of that period, a large mass of people went to the streets and squares of Baku, expressed their strong protest, and were attacked by Soviet troops. In the tragic days of 30 years ago, they put their breasts in front of tanks and achieved the honorable degree of martyrdom. Our people will always remember that terrible night that accelerates the independence movement of Azerbaijan, and the January 20 tragedy will forever live in the bloody memory of our people.
At the event it was underlined that the first political and legal assessment of the January 20 events was given by national leader, Heydar Aliyev. The day after the January 20 tragedy, the national leader visited the permanent representation of Azerbaijan in Moscow and disclosed the bloody action in Azerbaijan. At the initiative of the national leader after his return to power, a memorial complex "Eternal Torch" was erected at Alley of Martyrs, and the martyrs were given the honorary title of "January 20 Martyrs" by the decree signed by him on January 20, 1990.
At the event it was mentioned that President Ilham Aliyev has always focused on perpetuating the memory of the martyrs of January 20, honoring their names, as well as strengthening the social protection of their families, and important measures are being taken in this direction.
