The foundation of private higher education in Azerbaijan was laid by Azerbaijan University. First private university -Azerbaijan University (AU) was established in 1991 by professor Selahaddin Khalilov. The following is the list of AU rectors:
- Selahaddin Khalilov, doctor of philosophy, correspondent member of ANAS – 1991-2006;
- Farahim Sadıgov, doctor of pedagogics, professor - 2006-2007;
- Akif Musayev, doctor of economics, correspondent member of ANAS, counsellor to the Minister of Taxes on issues of taxing policy – 2007-2011;
- Aslan Qahramanli, candidate of physics-math, writer – 2011-2012;
- Eldar Qahramanov, candidate of economics, Deputy of the Milli Mejlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the II call – May 1, 2012- January 28, 2015;
- Farid Ahmadov, Ph.D. i law – from January 26, 2015- March 13, 2017;
- Saadat Aliyeva has been appointed as rector of Azerbaijan University since March 13, 2017.
The education at AU is regulated by the “Law on Education of Azerbaijan Republic” and by the decree # 75 of the Cabinet of Ministers dated to 23.04.2010 (State standards and programs for high education).
The Bologna process is valid at AU since 2006. The organization of the teaching process and assessment of students are adapted to the requirements of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).
1130 under-graduate students in 12 specializations; 91 graduate students in 12 specializations; 27 doctorates in 20 specializations, 30 degree candidates study at AU.
There are 3 schools with 200 teachers at AU. Two of them are correspondent members of ANAS, 15 are doctor of sciences, professors; 20 associate professor; 51 are candidate of sciences.
Azerbaijan University has 4055 under-graduate between 1995-2018 and 507 graduate students in 1999-2018 years.

The teaching languages are Azerbaijani and English. For students enrolled in English-language specialties, a special language training program is introduced in the first academic year. A year's English language training increases the level of maneuverability of our graduates in the labor market and is considered as a positive factor by employers.

We believe that the process of incorporation with international experience, scientific institutions, and other cultures are essential components of education. For this reason, special attention is paid to the expansion of international relations and participation in exchange programs. All students, as well as academic staff of Azerbaijan University have the opportunity to obtain international experience through academic exchanges.
Being a member of 6 international organizations a partner of several TEMPUS projects, such as "Mevlana" and "Erasmus +" in the field of education, Azerbaijan University cooperates with leading European and Turkish universities. AU's pedagogical staff and students are involved in the educational process at partner universities and credit exchange is carried out within mentioned programs.
Guest lecturers and specialists from foreign universities have a positive impact on the enrichment of our students worldwide.
With the efforts of the Career Center and the Student Youth Organization, actions that are carried out in the direction of increasing social activity, individual development, acquintance with business world, solving employment problems and awareness-raising measures create better conditions for going ahead of personnel rivalry in future.
Azerbaijan University, which implements its own budget-funded internship programs, also proves that it is a social science and education institution that shares social responsibility.
