The Director of the SPTM at Azerbaijan University, and a lecturer in the Department of Social Work Organization, Aygun Muradli, delivered a presentation titled “Ensuring Women’s Rights in Azerbaijan and Combating Violence: A Human Rights Approach” at an event dedicated to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The event, held in an online format, was organized in collaboration with Suleyman Demirel University in Turkey. Students specializing in Social Work participated in the event, where the significance of this Day was discussed, and the role of social work in protecting women’s rights and combating violence was highlighted.
In her presentation, Aygun Muradli outlined the legal frameworks and existing challenges in protecting women’s rights in Azerbaijan, as well as the work done in this regard. She noted that Azerbaijan became a party to the CEDAW Convention in 1995 and undertook to fight against domestic violence by adopting the Law on the Prevention of Domestic Violence in 2010.
The presentation emphasized that Azerbaijan implements national strategies to strengthen women’s rights. The State Committee for Family, Women, and Children Affairs actively works to increase women’s participation in socio-economic life, protect their rights, and prevent their violence. Additionally, the role of communities has been enhanced, particularly in strengthening mechanisms for social support for rehabilitation and reintegration of domestic violence survivors.
In her speech, the Director of the Center also highlighted the measures needed to ensure gender equality in Azerbaijan and achieve the complete eradication of violence against women.
It is worth noting that the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1999. The motto of the International Day this year is “16 Days of Activism: #NoExcuse. UNiTE to End Violence Against Women.” This motto underscores the importance of combating violence globally and the need for collective action to address this pressing issue.
