Azerbaijan University Reviews the Outcomes of 2024
Azerbaijan University hosted the first Academic Council meeting of 2025, where the results of 2024 were reviewed. The meeting featured speeches by Rector Saadat Aliyeva and Vice-Rector for Scientific Affairs Yusif Gasimov, who addressed the key issues on the agenda. Their speeches provided a comprehensive overview of the University's achievements, outlined upcoming priorities, and acknowledged certain shortcomings.
Following the speeches, Head of the Science Department Latifa Agamaliyeva presented a report on the University’s scientific activities in 2024 and the significant research outcomes achieved. The report covered various topics, including the University’s scientometric indicators, academic conferences and events, scientific journals, international research collaborations, student scientific societies, and published research papers, books, monographs, teaching aids, etc. It was noted that the University’s scientific library had been redesigned and its literary collection had been significantly expanded.
Special attention in the report was given to scientometric indicators of Azerbaijan University. It was noted that the University ranked 6th in the country based on its H-index in the Web of Science and Scopus databases. The University’s H-index in the Web of Science database was recorded at 34. Last year it was 29. Additionally, the University had 69 research papers indexed in this database, securing the 7th position among universities in the country in terms of publication count. The number of citations for papers authored by university staff and published in indexed journals reached 1,350, positioning the University in 5th place nationwide.
The report also highlighted that the profile of Azerbaijan University was created in Scopus database in 2023 and the H-index on this database increased from 30 to 37 compared to last year. The university’s researchers published 97 articles in Scopus-indexed journals, with a total of 1,708 citations. Based on these indicators, Azerbaijan University ranks 6th among the country's universities in Scopus’s database.
Additionally, it was emphasized that according to the Azerbaijan National H-index Ranking 2024, the University secured the 7th place nationwide. The National H-index is aimed at assessing the scientific productivity of Azerbaijani scholars, research groups, and institutions based on the consolidated H-index. The ranking takes into account the overall H-index of Azerbaijani research institutions, calculated using data from databases and platforms such as Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Based on these data, the rating indicator of the National H-index and the corresponding position in the rating are formed.
At the Academic Council meeting, it was noted that, in accordance with the Rector’s decree of Azerbaijan University dated February 5, 2018, on “Encouraging Employees for Scientific Research Activities”, 18 university staff members whose articles were published in indexed journals in 2024 were awarded.
During the meeting, the Department of Political and Social Sciences was recognized with the “Department of the Year” award. Additionally, the Rector’s Advisor and Director of the International Center for Master’s and Doctoral Studies, Nushaba Guliyeva, Head of the Department of Political and Social Sciences, Elvin Talyshinsky, and Professor of the Department of Translation and Philology, Shaban Huseynov, were honored with certificates for their outstanding contributions to scientific research.
The meeting concluded with discussions on the agenda items of the Academic Council, followed by the presentation of proposals.
