An event dedicated to "October 18 - Independence Restoration Day" was organised at Azerbaijan University. The keyonte lecturer of the event, which began with the sounding of the National Anthem, was Professor Karim Shukurov, Director General of the History Institute of ANAS.

Yusif Gasimov, vice-rector for scientific affairs of the university, opened the event and noted that modern Azerbaijan is the political successor of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic that existed in 1918-1920. With the restoration of state independence in October 1991, a new page was opened in the history of Azerbaijan's statehood. But the restoration of territorial integrity and full control of state borders became possible after 30 years - after the Karabakh victory achieved by defending Azerbaijan's sovereign rights within the framework of international law.

The head of the faculty of social sciences, professor Gabil Aliyev, said that more than 100 books published by the Institute of History and the product of serious research on the history of Azerbaijan were donated to the library of the university, and expressed his gratitude to the management of the institute on behalf of the staff of Azerbaijan University.

The speech of the General Director of ANAS Institute of History, professor Karim Shukurov was dedicated to the topic "History of the period of independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan: study, successes, problems, tasks". In his speech, Karim Shukurov, reviewing the events that took place in the first years of the restoration of state independence, noted that the statehood of Azerbaijan faced various difficulties during the period of independence. The restoration of its independence was carried out in a very difficult and complicated time, in the conditions of repelling the military aggression of Armenia. Only after national leader Heydar Aliyev came to the leadership of Azerbaijan in June 1993, decisive and purposeful steps were taken to strengthen state independence. Over the last 18 years, during the presidency of Ilham Aliyev, the worthy successor of the national leader, the Republic of Azerbaijan achieved great success in all fields, and the lands of Karabakh were freed from the enemy. In his speech, Karim Shukurov specially emphasized the role of Azerbaijani youth in winning the glorious victory, and also touched upon the construction and reconstruction works carried out in Karabakh during the post-war period.
