Since 2022, under a memorandum signed between the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of ANAS and the German Archaeological Institute, joint archaeological research has been conducted with the participation of archaeologists from the two countries within the framework of the “Archaeological Investigations of the Karabakh Plain” project. This year, excavations were carried out at the Chalcolithic-period settlements of Leylatepe and Janavartepe, located in the Aghjabadi district. The research uncovered excavation-type residential and economic structures, as well as hundreds of material culture artifacts, reflecting the cultural, economic, and domestic life of the period.

Students from the Faculty of History of Azerbaijan University, Shafa Humbatova and Zahra Bakhshiyeva, members of the Historical Figures Club under the Department of Political and Social Sciences, also participated in the project this year. The students delivered presentations in English to Azerbaijani and German archaeologists and took an active part in excavations, as well as in documenting archaeological sites and artifacts. For their contribution, they were awarded certificates of recognition from the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of ANAS and the German Archaeological Institute.

It should be noted that the research focuses on the study of Neolithic and Chalcolithic period settlements on the Karabakh plain. The project is co-directed by Khagani Almammadov on behalf of the Azerbaijani side and Mark Iserlis on behalf of the German side.
