Two degrees in tourism - tourism guidance and organization of tourism work -have been added to the Bachelor’s admission plan of Azerbaijan University for the 2020/2021 academic year . Admission to either degree is possible on the basis of the state finance (free of charge) and on tuition-charge basis. Subbaccalaureates will also be able to participate in the admission competition for studies of these degrees.

These degrees, which replace tourism and hospitality, are among the degrees included in the list of "Classification of bachelor's degree specialties (programs) of higher education" approved after the recent amendments to the Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 8 of January 12, 2009. Admission to these newly created degrees will be held in the 2020/2021 academic year, and the first graduation will be in 2024.

The Azerbaijan government has announced the development of tourism as a priority in the non-oil sector of the economy. This is reflected in the "Strategic Roadmap for the development of the specialized tourism industry in the Republic of Azerbaijan" by the decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated December 6, 2016.

A tour guide is a person who informs local and foreign tourists about the geography, history, economy, art and cultural centers, museums, material and spiritual historical and architectural vestiges of our regions, as well as ethnographic features of the region's population. Reception of tourists, arrangement of excursions and tour programs, giving tours to museums, reserves, exhibitions, all other places of interest, study of documents and historical materials related to these places, delivery of information during the tour, explanation of safety rules to tour participants, conducting documentation are among the duties performed by the tourist guide. Graduates of the degree can work in local and foreign tourism organizations, government agencies such as the Azerbaijan State Tourism Agency.

The main purpose of the degree of tourism organization is to train personnel with theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of customer service, sales and management for the tourism industry. Responsibilities of graduates include organizing foreign and domestic, individual and group tours, establishing contacts and business correspondence with foreign and domestic partners, answering customer inquiries, booking hotels and tourism services, writing travel insurance, analyzing and preparing seasonal tours, visa support services, air ticket operations. Tourism organization graduates can work in relevant government agencies such as hotel chains, tourism companies, international tourism organizations, the Azerbaijan State Tourism Agency.
