20 January events were commemorated at Azerbaijan University

The staff of Azerbaijan University have visited the Alley of Martyrs. The memory 20 January tragedy martyrs, who sacrificed their lives for the sake of independence and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, was deeply commemorated and carnations were laid on their graves.

Following the visit, a memorial event was held at the University building on the occasion of the 29th anniversary of 20 January events. After the event was announced, the memory of the martyrs was commemorated with a minute of silence.

The event was devoted to the causes and consequences of the events of January 20, played the role by the collapse of the Soviet empire and the restoration of Azerbaijan's independence. It was noted that January 20 is a great day for the people of Azerbaijan on the struggle for independence and a major turning point in the beginning of a great process. It was mentioned that Baku was used as a landfill on the night of 19 to 20 January 1990 to storm the national liberation movement and to intimidate the other peoples living in the USSR. But the committed terrible crime was not able to break the will of the Azerbaijani people, on the contrary resulted in the further rise of national liberation movement and restoration of Azerbaijan's independence.

A day after the bloody incident, the national leader Heydar Aliyev's press conference in Moscow and the disclosure of the dual policy of the empire against  Azerbaijani people in front of the world community were regarded as a great historical event.

It was noted that January 20, which is an already historical event, should remain as a day of honor and glory of our people, and a glorious page of our history in our genetic memory. We should not forget the dear memory of our martyrs. This is the sacred duty of every Azerbaijani.

At the end of the event, a film about the January 20 tragedy was screened.
