Azerbaijan University Hosted an International Conference ‘South Caucasus in the Context of Modern Global Challenges’
Azerbaijan University hosted an international conference ‘South Caucasus in the Context of Modern Global Challenges.’ The conference’s objective was to become a platform for exploring social, political, military, ecological, and logistical views on the South Caucasus in both regional and international contexts and provide the results of research performed in these areas.
The hybrid conference opening ceremony started with a welcoming speech by the Vice-Rector of Azerbaijan University for Scientific Affairs, Yusif Gasimov. The Vice-Rector noted that processes occurring in the world and the Caucasus as its part, ongoing and ended conflicts, and new geopolitical situations have turned the region into a point of intersecting interests of global powers. The conference is of great importance in this regard. Yusif Gasimov provided information on the plenary session of the conference and expressed gratitude to all local and international participants.
Further at the opening ceremony, speeches by the Director of the Institute of Turkish World Studies at Ege University of Turkey, Professor Nadim Majit, Professor Vasil Gonashvili from Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University of Georgia, and the Head of the Department of Political and Social Sciences at Azerbaijan University, Elvin Talishinski, were heard.
Professor Nadim Majit expressed his great satisfaction with being in Azerbaijan in a period when relations between Azerbaijan and Turkey have reached a strategic partnership level, setting an example for the world. He emphasized the major role of qualitatively new relations in turning the South Caucasus region into a zone of stability, dialogue, cooperation, and peace, as well as their potential impact on relations among other Turkic states and the close unification of the Turkic world.
Professor Vasil Gonashvili highlighted the historical roots of Georgia-Azerbaijan relations and noted that both countries are interested in the positive development of these relations. The Head of the Department of Political and Social Sciences, Elvin Talishinski, informed participants of the conference’s agenda and abstracts accepted, and wished success for the event.
At the plenary session of the international conference, the Head of Department at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, PhD in History Joni Kvitsiani, made a report dedicated to ‘Strategic Partnership between Georgia and Azerbaijan Against Modern Threats in the Black Sea-Caspian Region.’
Following the opening ceremony and plenary session, the conference continued with three sectional meetings. At these meetings, more than 100 abstracts from five countries were presented in both traditional and online formats. The sessions involved presentations and discussions of abstracts on various topics, including new political realities, the policy and prospects of major powers, and economic integration opportunities in the South Caucasus, the impact of conflicts on the ecosystem and ways to resolve them, the South Caucasus as part of international corridors, etc.
