A round table on the topic “Every person is valuable” was held at Azerbaijan University within the framework of “Human Rights Month” announced by the Human Rights Commissioner (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan. At the event, the participants listened to reports of Nigar Agayeva, Head of the Child Rights Protection division of the Ombudsman Office, Aytan Tarverdiyeva, Head of the Unit on Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Department for Cooperation with International and Civil Society Organizations, and Azer Allahveranov, Chairman of the Public Council under the State Migration Service, on various aspects of the topic and addressed their questions to experts.

The event was opened by Tunzala Verdiyeva, Head of the Department of Social Work Organization. Introducing the speakers to the academic and student staff of the University, Head of the department noted that one of the main directions of state policy in Azerbaijan is the promotion of human rights. National leader Heydar Aliyev, guided in his activities by human rights as the main criterion, signed an order on June 18, 1998 approving the “State Program on the Protection of Human Rights”. Also, at the initiative of the national leader, in 2001, the Constitutional Law “On the Human Rights Commissioner (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan” was adopted. June 18, the date of approval of this state program, has been marked as “Human Rights Day” in the Republic of Azerbaijan by the Order of President Ilham Aliyev.

In her report, Nigar Agayeva, Head of the Child Rights Protection division of the Ombudsman Office, spoke about the work done within the framework of the “Human Rights Month”, which is traditionally held from May 18 to June 18 on the eve of “18th of June – the Human Rights Day”.

In her speech, Aytan Tarverdiyeva, Head of the Unit on Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, provided information on activities of the Ombudsman to improve legislation in the field of protecting the rights of persons with disabilities.

Ayten Tarverdiyeva noted that the Ombudsman Office closely cooperates with relevant government agencies and civil society institutions in that respect.

The report of Azer Allahveranov, Chairman of the Public Council under the State Migration Service, was devoted to the work aimed at protecting and ensuring the rights and freedoms of refugees and internally displaced persons, including migrants, improving housing conditions, solving their problems in the social, medical, labor, educational and other fields. And Parviz Gurbanov, Head of the Legal Department of Azerbaijan University, made a report on “History of Human Rights”.

It was noted in the speeches that a unified Call Center was established in order to ensure citizen satisfaction and increase the effectiveness of the Ombudsman's activities within the framework of consistent reforms in the field of human rights.
