A commemorative event dedicated to the Khojaly Genocide was held at Azerbaijan University to mark its 33rd anniversary. The event began with the National Anthem, followed by a moment of silence to honor the victims of the genocide.

During the memorial ceremony, speakers highlighted the historical developments following the Khojaly Genocide, emphasizing Azerbaijan’s rapid and comprehensive progress, its victory in Karabakh, and the one-day localized counterterrorism operation conducted on September 19-20, 2023. It was noted that throughout history, strong nations have endured tragic events. Over the past 33 years, the Azerbaijani people have witnessed significant events and transformations. The Armenian occupying forces have been withdrawn from the country’s territory, and Azerbaijan now exercises full control over its national borders. The Azerbaijani nation will never forget the restoration of its sovereignty, the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for territorial integrity, and the innocent victims of the Khojaly Genocide.

During the event, presentations were delivered by Yusif Gasimov, Vice-Rector for Scientific Affairs at Azerbaijan University, Doctor of Mathematics; Rizvan Huseynov, Director of the Caucasus History Center, Political Analyst, and Military Expert; and Sabukhi Yunuslu, Head of the Process Coordination Department at the State Employment Agency.

In his speech, Yusif Gasimov, Vice-Rector for Scientific Affairs, emphasized the importance of remembrance days. Military expert Rizvan Huseynov focused on the occupation of Khojaly, as well as the causes and consequences of the Khojaly Genocide. Sabukhi Yunuslu provided insights into the Great Return to the liberated territories, including Khojaly, highlighting ongoing reconstruction efforts and employment opportunities for the returning population.

Additionally, a photo exhibition titled “Khojaly Genocide through the lens of journalists” was organized in the University’s exhibition hall. The exhibit showcased photographs captured by local and international journalists and photographers in Khojaly and Aghdam immediately after the tragedy.
