Student satellite competition demonstrated at Azerbaijan University

“CanSat Azerbaijan-2018” (Student Satellite in Azerbaijan) competition was demonstrated for the students of Azerbaijan University. The competition to be held in association with “Azercosmos” OJSC and the Ministry of Education is expected to be organized among the local university teams in the current academic year.

Fidan Behbudova, the senior expert of the corporative communication department of “Azercosmos” OJSC gave information to students about the activity of Azercosmos OJSC. Shamo Hummatli, the satellite engineer made a speech about international and local “CanSat” competitions and the first “CanSat” team of Azerbaijan. Murad Mammadov, the satellite operator provided detailed information about the technical conditions, stages, application and registration rules, assessment factors of the competition and awarding.

It was mentioned that, the competition aims at increasing the interest in student satellite projects in our country, popularizing it among Azerbaijani students, representing Azerbaijan in such other international competitions with much better and more experienced teams, getting higher results and gaining practical skills and abilities for preparation of nano and other real satellites by local specialists in our country in future.

The purpose of the model satellite is to execute the task of payload, to protect it during landing and to send telemetric data to ground station at 1 Hz frequency. As a payload, photocamera has been intended for use. The tasks of the payload is to take photo upon an order to be sent from the ground station and store it in the memory device inside the model. The model should be in a size to fit in cylindrical container with 200 mm height and 120 mm diameter. The model shall weigh 500 gr at most, fulfill the task individually being separated from the container at 400 mm height and land in 1-2 minute interval at the least.

Every university can participate in the competition in teams. The winning team shall be awarded with the right to take part in the International “CanSat” competition. The successfull participants shall be allowed to gain experience in Azercosmos.

The international “CanSat” competition aimed at motivation and development of university students in terms of cosmic technologies is held every year since 1998 with the support of NASA, American Astronomical Society (AAS), American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA ) and leading authorities of the cosmic sector.
