Today State Flag Day is celebrated in Azerbaijan. At the same time it is the 100th anniversary of adoption of State Flag .

State Flag Day was established by the decree ” Establishment of State Flag Day of Azerbaijan Republic”  of  Prezident Ilham Aliyev dated on November 17, 2009. This day was established to commemorate the anniversary of adoption of State Flag of Azerbaijan in 1918.

Our State Flag was lowered from the Parliament House of Azerbaijan in 1920 after being occupied by the bolsheviks. Later it was waved in the squares during the Azerbaijan National Movement in 1988.

In 1990, November 17, the Flag of Azerbaijan was confirmed as a State Flag of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic in the session held by Heydar Aliyev, the National Leader of Azerbaijan.

In 1991, February 5, the flag was oficially declared as the  State Flag of Azerbaijan Republic according to the decree “About State Flag of Azerbaijan Republic” adopted by the Supreme Council of Azerbaijan Republic.

Passing through torturing ways, experiencing hard times, carrying special meanings for each symbol and color on it, the National Flag symbolizes the independence and sovereignty of Azerbaijan and is raised on the buildings of state organizations and diplomatic representations. It waves in front of  the  United  Nations  Organization the building, along with other  flags of over 180 independent countries.
