The opening ceremony of the ”COP29 simulation” project was held
In connection with the fact that Azerbaijan will host “COP29” (the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 29) to the UNFCCC) and with the announcement of 2024 in our country as the “Year of Solidarity for the sake of the Green world”, the project “COP29 simulation” is being implemented at Azerbaijan University. Students of Baku State University, Azerbaijan State University of Economics, Azerbaijan State Oil and Industrial University, Azerbaijan University of Tourism and Management, and Baku Engineering University also joined the ”COP29 simulation” project. At the opening ceremony with the participation of students who joined the project, a draw was held and the international organizations that the students would represent were determined.
Head of the Department of Political and Social Sciences, PhD in Political Sciences Elvin Talyshinsky opened the event and informed about the purpose of the project. The head of the Department said that within the framework of the project, it is planned to transfer knowledge to students about the impact and consequences of political decisions of states on the environment and our planet, develop their skills in public speaking, forming arguments and conducting debates, and inform students about COP29. Speaking about the political significance of the project, Elvin Talyshinsky noted that Azerbaijan's hosting of a prestigious event primarily demonstrates the government's strategy to take serious measures related to climate change. In general, the fact that Azerbaijan hosted COP29 is a victory for the policy of our state. Thanks to the purposeful and balanced work carried out in the field of foreign policy in recent years, Azerbaijan has managed to achieve significant successes. Azerbaijan, which has always pursued a clear, transparent and objective policy aimed at strengthening friendship and cooperation, is actively involved in numerous political, economic and regional development projects.
Then, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics Khanym Guliyeva made a speech, noting that the conference is of great importance for the country not only in environmental, but also in political and economic terms: “Addressing climate change requires a change in economic systems and practices, and this change is in the transition to renewable energy sources and ensuring energy efficiency in various sectors of the economy. In particular, the fact that economically developed countries help developing countries cope with the effects of climate change and provide them with financial support to help transition to a low-carbon economy makes it necessary to determine the level of financial obligations and how resources are distributed. As a result, new markets are being formed, which creates economic incentives for reducing emissions and investing in sustainable practices”.
It should be noted that the project is organized jointly by the Department of Political and Social Sciences of the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Business and Economics of Azerbaijan University. The simulation project with the participation of students from various higher educational institutions will last 3 months. Since March, meetings will be held within the framework of the project with experts in the fields of ecology, economics, and international relations, as well as with representatives of civil society institutions and representatives of the media.
