Misir Mardanov, director of the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, Corresponding-member of ANAS, doctor of physico-mathematical sciences, professor was received as a guest by Azerbaijan University. He delivered the lecture on People’s Republic of Azerbaijan. 

The rector of Azerbaijan University Saadat Aliyeva also attended the meeting and greeted the guest and thanked him for accepting the invitation. Vice-rector for Science of Azerbaijan University Yusif Gasimov stressed out that, Misir Mardanov has fulfilled his intellectual responsibility with his researches and works on People’s Republic of Azerbaijan. 

At the beginning of his speech Misir Mardanov congratulated the professors and teachers of university on the occasion of October 5- International Teachers’ Day underlining the great role of teachers in society growth.  

The lecture covered socio-political situation and reforms conducted in education in Azerbaijan and the South Caucasus during the time of the establishment of People’s Republic of Azerbaijan. It was stressed out that, founders of the Republic attached great importance to complete renewal of education system, public awareness and training of national personnel. Declaring Azerbaijani language the state language and nationalization of schools were the first and the most significant steps taken. 

Professor gave information and presented some interesting facts and statistics about reforms conducted in the management and content of education system,  preparation of class books, sending 100 young people abroad to study by the order of the parliament, establishment of Baku State University- the first educational institution in the country, increasing the network of primary education institutions, moving Gori Seminary to Kazakh etc. 

In the lecture philanthropic and educational activity of Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev were specially highlighted. 

It was mentioned that, there are such special periods in every nation’s history that, not only historians but also everybody must be aware of them. The period of People’s Republic of Azerbaijan is one of those important pages in the history of Azerbaijani nation. 

At the end, Mr. Misir Mardanov gave the following books of which he is co-author and also project lead as a gift to university: “Azerbaijani Education in the years of People’s Republic” (1918-1920), “Azerbaijanis studying in higher education institutions until 1920” (Encyclopedic Study), “Schoolchildren’s Expository Mathematics dictionary” “Essays on the education history of Azerbaijan and our first higher educated Azerbaijanis”.
