The international conference "Nizami Ganjavi's works as a literary and historical source in the study of the ethnogenesis of the Azerbaijani people in the context of the Caucasus and the Turkic world" held today at Azerbaijan University has come to an end. The conference featured presentations and discussions on actual questions such as historical facts and issues of national identity in the works of the great poet, the role of Nizami Ganjavi in the study of the ethnogenesis of the Azerbaijani people as well as the topic of Nizami Ganjavi and modern history.

Making a keynote speech Vice-Rector of the University for Science, Professor Yusif Gasimov introduced the conference program and plenary speakers to the conference participants and mentioned that 2021 was declared by President Ilham Aliyev “The Year of Nizami Ganjavi" in Azerbaijan and the conference was organized within this framework.

Kamran Talattof, a professor at the University of Arizona, spoke on " Star Peace: The Sky And Space In Nizami's Verse" and Mattew R. Hotham, a professor at Ball State University, made a speech on "Clutching the Pearl-Stringer: Exploring Nizami Ganjavi's Poetic Legacy."

Professor Kamran Talatoff noted in his speech that existance of cosmic objects and reflection of their arrangement in Nizami’s works prove the poet’s deep knowledge in astronomy. The American scientist also stressed that Nizami in a masterly way depicts these objects in embodiment of the love of the classical Middle Eastern style.

Professor Mattew R. Hotham spoke about the influence of Islamic Sufism on Nizami's works, gave information on various scientific theories about Sufism and Islam underlining that Sufism occupies a special place in Nizami's creativity.

In his speech, Professor of the Azerbaijani Language and Literature Department Gorkhmaz Guliyev shared his views on the history of research on Nizami Ganjavi's creativity in Azerbaijani literary criticism and the definition of its place in world literature.

The conference continued with presentation of research papers included in the program and discussions on the presentations.

It should be noted that the conference organized as part of "The Year of Nizami Ganjavi" is dedicated to the 880th anniversary of the great Azerbaijani poet Nizami Ganjavi and was held online on ZOOM platform in accordance with the current conditions.
