About Baku
Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, is situated on the shore of the Caspian Sea, in the Absheron peninsula. Baku is not only the center of Azerbaijan, but also the biggest industrial, cultural and scientific center of the region. Being one of the most important touristic destiantions of Caucasus, Baku attracts everyone’s attention with its modernity, antiquity and history.
Plenty of historical and architectural monuments of different ages located in the center and around Baku, make this magnificent city attractive and captivating for tourists.
Splendid harmony of the Easten and Westen architecture creates unique atmosphere in the city. Conferences, forums, festivals, exhibitions, sport competitions and other international events held in Baku increase its importance and popularity around the world.
Icherisheher (the Old City), the oldest part of Baku, is surrounded with castle walls. There are hundreds of historical monuments in Icherisheher, the pearl of the Azerbaijan architecture.
Icherisheher was declaired a historical-architectural reservation in 1977, and was included in UNESCO World Heritage List along with Maiden Tower and Shirvanshahs’ Palace in 2000.
One of the most worthwhile destinations of the city is Baku Boulvard. The history of establishment of Boulvard known as The Seaside National Park dates back to more than 100 years.
Being one of the popular sights of city residents and guests, Baku Boulvard has magnificent landscape design. Visitors can see the International Mugham Center, the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum, Baku Crystal Hall along the Boulvard.
One of touristic destinations worth seeing is Ateshgah. Ateshgah, the castle-like religous temple, located in Surakhani settlement, based on Persian and Indian inscriptions, has been used as a place of worship. The pentagonal complex was constructed in 17th and 18th centures. So far a lot of fire-worshippers from different countries visit this place and perform their religious rites.
Gobustan, situated at a distance of about 60 km from Baku, is famous for rock petroglyphs which history dates back to thousands years. Primitive men created more than six thousands on rock pictures (carvings) while living here. Gobustan State Historic Reserve has been included in UNESCO World Heritage List in 2007.
Magnificent buildings- Flame Towers and Heydar Aliyev Center represent modern Baku. Flame Towers Complex reminds one of tongues of flame. The complex is the highest building in Baku, with a height of 190 cm.
Heydar Aliyev Center, one of modern architectural monuments, has been designed by the famous architect Zaha Hadid. The Center was awarded with the main prize of the "Design Of The Year" competition by British Design Museum in 2014. In the same year, the Auditorium of the Heydar Aliyev Center was the first in the list of 15 most beautiful concert halls in the world on the assessment of buildings by German influential Emporis company. The Center is the ideal place for exihibiting contemporary art collections, museum exhibits, and performances of world music stars.
