Department of Social Work Organization of Azerbaijan University held an event dedicated to October 1 – the International Day of Older Persons.

At the event, head of the Department, PhD in Psychology Tunzala Verdieva spoke about the importance of social work with the older persons. The head of the Department noted that the Day of the Older Persons is celebrated with the aim of raising awareness about violence among the older people and other problems, attracting public attention to solving these problems and assessing the contribution of older people to society.

Then Jamilya Mamedova, a first-year student studying in English with a degree in Social Work, told the participants about the history of this day and the concept of the “older person”. Jamila Mammadova noted that the International Day of Older Persons is celebrated in our country as well as all over the world. According to the Resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1992, October 1 is celebrated as the International Day of Older Persons. According to the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan “On Social Services”, citizens of Azerbaijan who have reached the age of 70 are considered elderly.

It should be noted that the International Day of Older Persons has been celebrated in Azerbaijan since 1993.
