The Translation (English Language) program focuses on developing the skills required to translate a wide range of texts accurately and appropriately from English into Azerbaijani and from Azerbaijani into English. Its primary objective is to prepare specialists with advanced language proficiency in both English and Azerbaijani who can translate texts from various subject areas to professional standards.

Education

The program is designed to develop students’ spoken and written communication skills in English and Azerbaijani while providing a solid foundation in translation theory and practice.

Students study the fundamentals of translation theory, the lexical, grammatical, and stylistic features of English and Azerbaijani, consecutive and oral translation, the translation of specialised texts, terminology management, and the principles of maintaining stylistic consistency in translation.

Translating legal, economic, socio-political, scientific, technical, and other specialised texts enables students to work confidently with different subject areas and terminology. The curriculum also emphasises source research, the use of translation tools and resources, and the editing and revision of translated texts.

Career Opportunities

Graduates can work as translators and editors in translation agencies, publishing houses, media organizations, international companies, government institutions, and non-governmental organizations.

In addition to written and oral translation, career opportunities include preparing and editing specialised texts, subtitling, and localisation. Graduates may also provide interpreting services at international events, conferences, and meetings, support international business correspondence, and develop multilingual content for different audiences.

The expansion of digital platforms and online services is also creating new opportunities for freelance translators and flexible professional working arrangements.

The Future of the Major

The translation industry is evolving rapidly in response to advances in digital technology, with artificial intelligence-powered translation tools becoming increasingly integrated into professional workflows. Nevertheless, translating complex texts, selecting appropriate terminology, preserving style and context, and adapting translations to their intended purpose and audience require advanced linguistic and professional expertise.

In this evolving environment, translators increasingly work with technology while taking responsibility for reviewing and editing machine-generated translations, assessing translation quality, and producing specialised translations. These skills are becoming essential components of professional translation practice.

Technological advancement does not eliminate the role of the translator. Instead, it expands the profession by introducing new tools, responsibilities, and career opportunities.
