The Scimago Institutions Rankings agency announced World University Rankings 2023. Azerbaijan University, which entered the report for the first time in 2022, this year, like last year, ranked 2nd in the list of country universities. Azerbaijan University, ranked 3rd among the country's scientific institutions in the report for 2022, took 2nd place in the report for this year, rising one step higher. Azerbaijan University was also included in the report with the Q1 category, which is the highest category in this ranking. One of the main ranking criteria is number of scientific articles published by the staff of a given institution in journals indexing in the Scopus database and number of references to these articles.

It should be noted that total of 9 institutions from Azerbaijan were included in the ranking list this year: 5 universities, 3 scientific institutes and 1 scientific organization. And last year there were 8 of them. 

This ranking is carried out in the context of cooperation between Spanish laboratory Scimago and one of the world's largest scientific publishers Elsevier. Elsevier is one of the most actively used platforms of scientific publications in Azerbaijan in order to determine the scientometric indicators of researchers.
